It’s Cold Outside! Winterize Your Hair!
So far this winter has been very cold down here in the South. I’m talking 20 degree weather, which is unusual. In all of my the 10 years living in the South, I don’t ever remember it being this cold!!!
In the winter season most people tend to take extra care of their skin. Many ensure to use oils as well as lotion to keep the skin moisturized to avoid chaffing and dryness. In addition, there are some who ensure to keep their lips moisturized with vitamin E and chap-stick. This same attention should be given to your hair!
It is imperative (especially for those with thin or fine hair) to winterize your hair during this cold season. The frigid temperatures can cause the hair to become dry and brittle. This along with high winds can lead to breakage and hair damage. Here are a few tips for winterizing your hair this season:
1.) Moisture, moisture, moisture!!! It is so important to find the right moisturizer for your hair! Keeping the proper moisture balance will mitigate the chance for split ends and dry brittle hair. My favorite is the Aveda Universal Styling Crème. It’s lightweight and doesn’t add too much stress to my fine mane. For a special touch add a light essential oil to seal in the moisture. Note: Do not use heavy oils.
2.) Deep condition – this is the time to be diligent with your weekly treatments. For fine hair, I recommend doing at least one protein treatment every 6 weeks and always use a moisturizing deep conditioner every week. I’ve found that what also works great is mixing a mild protein deep conditioner with a moisturizing treatment providing the right balance for your fine strands.
3.) If you’re wearing hats…purchase one or two that have some sort of silk or satin lining. If you don’t have that, no problem, take an old silk/satin scarf and sew it or put on the inside of your hat while wearing. This provides added protection against breakage and damage.
4.) Protective Styles – Winter is one of the best times to incorporate protective styles in your regimen. Hair Replacement Systems that don’t require surgery is a popular style this year. These include lace wigs, regular wigs, etc.
