What are the Causes of Thinning Hair?

Thinning hair is common for many people. Some estimate that approximately 60 million Americans suffer from thinning hair. It is important that I mention that thinning hair is very different from having thin or fine hair. Thinning hair implies that you are actually losing hair.

You may be wondering why you hair is thinning. Well, there could be a number of reasons for thinning hair or hair loss. In this 7 Part series we will discuss some of the most common causes of thinning hair. The top causes are genetics, illness, poor nutrition, stress, and medications. There are a couple of others that I will touch on later in this series that have more to do with poor hair care practices. Remember though that the only way to determine what is causing your hair loss is by consulting with your doctor.

First, let’s look at genetics.

Genetics is said to be the most common cause for thinning hair and baldness. This means that your inherited DNA from either your mother or father has a lot do with your hair pattern. The most common genetically determined condition is Androgenetic Alopecia. With this condition the hair all over the scalp becomes thinner, but the hairline does not recede. Unfortunately, there is no prevention for this type of disorder. However, in women, Androgenetic Alopecia rarely leads to complete baldness.

Here are some facts about Androgenetic Alopecia:

Approximately over 30 million women suffer from this disorder

Occurs in about 13% of premenopausal women

May affect 75% of women over the age of 65

Although this genetic disorder is not preventable, it is treatable. One popular treatment is Women’s Rogaine, the active ingredient is minoxidil.
