Thin Hair Care: Thin Hair vs. Fine Hair Often, the terms “thin hair” and “fine hair” are used interchangeably with one another. However, to add value to your thin hair care regimen it is important to understand that there is a distinct difference between these two terminologies. The term “fine” refers to the actual diameter of the shaft of an individual hair strand. The term “thin” is used to reference the number of hairs per square inch dispersed amongst the entire head and is also used to describe the density of an individual’s hair. Regardless of the term that is used to describe one’s tresses, the same problems often occur with each hair type. Hair texture is often described in terms of fine, medium, or coarse, which refers to the diameter of the strands. Hair density is usually described in terms of thin, medium, or thick, which refers to the compactness or concentration of the hair. The texture a person is born with is often determined by their genetic makeup. On the other hand, thin hair can be caused by a wide variety of factors, like an individual’s diet, their age, illnesses, etc.. It is best to consult your physician [...]

We are nearing the end of the What Causes Thinning Hair Series. So far up to this point we’ve talked about thinning hair as a result of poor diet, stress, medications, illnesses, and disorders. However, there are causes of thinning hair that are brought on by unhealthy hair care practices. Today we will discuss over/unnecessary manipulation. Over Manipulation Oftentimes unnecessary manipulation can hinder growth and retention as well as cause stress on the hair. When you manipulate the hair way too much the result can be thinning hair, hair loss, or breakage. Over manipulation may in the form of excessive brushing or combing of the hair, constantly putting your hands in your hair, excessive rubbing of the hair when washing it, excessive blow-drying and flat ironing, etc. How to incorporate “low” manipulation into your regimen?
Hair Pulling This is Part 5 of the What Causes Thinning Hair Series. Trichotillomania is a psychological disorder in which people have an overpowering urge to pull out their hair. For some hair pulling may be intentional while for others it is an unconscious behavior. The hair pulling can be from their scalp, eyebrows, hair from the legs, arms, pubic area or other areas of their body. The majority of people pull hair with their fingers. However, some may utilize tools such as tweezers, brushes and combs. Moreover, a large amount of people with trichotillomania pull hair from their scalp, particularly in the crown area. Hair pulling from the scalp often leaves them with patchy bald spots on their head. Due to the irregularity of the bald spots, these people do all they can to cover up those areas. The cause of trichotillomania is unknown, but is being researched on a continuous basis. Signs and symptoms of trichotillomania include: - Patchy bald areas on the scalp or other areas of your body - Bare or missing eyelashes or eyebrows - Chewing or eating pulled-out hair - Playing with pulled-out hair - Rubbing pulled-out hair against your lips or face Treatment [...]
