Protective Style – Braid Out
A Braid Out is Great for Fine Hair
A Braid out is a protective style that provides great texture of waves or curl to the hair. It’s primarily worn by African American women, but also looks beautiful on all women. This style is especially very healthy for women with thin or fine hair! It provides a quick way to add waves to the hair without using direct heat (curling irons and flat irons). It is called a braid out, because you are making your hair curly by braiding it. A braid out can be done on wet or dry hair. Due to the hair being in a fragile state when wet and more susceptible to breakage at this time, I would recommend that fine haired women achieve this style on dry hair.
How to Do a Braid Out on Dry Hair
You always want to start off with a clean head of hair. So you should first wash and condition your hair, then either air dry or use a hooded dryer to dry (do not use a blow dryer – remember try to avoid direct heat whenever possible). For added moisture and softness, I would suggest also applying your favorite leave in conditioner.
1.) Section hair and braid each section (shoot for 10-12 braids).
2.) When you have finished all braids – spritz your hair with water or your homemade moisturizer spritz (you can also use setting lotion I don’t recommend this though as sometimes setting lotions have alcohol in them which causes dry hair). Using water, homemade spritz, or setting lotion will allow the hair to set, sort of like if you were going to roller set your hair (you can also do this step before braiding the hair, but be sure to not saturate the hair you only want to dampen the hair a little bit).
3.) Now let the hair dry (either with hooded dryer, air dry, or sleep in the braids overnight).
4.) When hair is completely dry unravel the braids with your fingers.
5.) Use your fingers to fluff or work it until you achieve your desired look.
6.) Apply a light oil or serum to your hair for shine.
Tips
1.) Use fewer braids for bigger curls/waves and use more braids if you want tighter curls/waves.
2.) Do not saturate the hair it only needs to be dampened.
3.) Smaller rollers can be used on the ends to secure the braid.
4.) A rat tail comb can be used for parting, however, use fingers to separate the sections so that you
are not left with visible parts when you wear the style.
